How do we prepare for school leadership? This presentation explores the preparation of school leaders in Aotearoa New Zealand. Although from a New Zealand perspective, the aim is to increase understanding of what is required of leadership programmes and strategies to best prepare principals to lead schools in any context. Some background to current trends in leadership preparation in New Zealand is provided, together with school leaders’ reflections on personal experience of leadership preparation. The Teaching Council (2018) leadership strategy for school leadership in Aotearoa New Zealand is explored and some preliminary findings referencing the experience of school leadership during the COVID pandemic are shared. Some implications for leadership preparation are identified. This is an asynchronous presentation, but participants will be invited to reflect on their leadership preparation, the qualities, skills and strategies needed for leadership, and to recognise any new learnings in the current situation.
